、and ultimately for many, there was less money to be spent on alcohol. The headlines from multinational spirits groups for years now have been about the unstoppable march towards premiumisation, and for a while it seemed to be a trend that would only increase, but in 2023 we saw more consumers trading do

、 of the roads were closed for two or three months, and when the invasion happened, the government of Ukraine implemented a temporary law to prohibit the sale of alcohol, and of course we immediately terminated licences that we had with two large vodka markets,Russia and Belarus.”But while the Ukrainian

、 some sectors experienced major growth last year, that performance has not been repeatedGLOBAL CATEGORY PERFORMANCEThe declines that have been felt on an individual basis by many of the million-case brands in our list also played out at a category-wide level.Even the most on-trend spirits categories
、havent been immune from the general downturn.Agave-based spirits, gin and whisky were among the fastest-growing categories between 2021 and 2022,and while all three did see growth in volumes between 2022 and 2023,it was at a considerably more conservative pace. While gins 4%growth isnt historic by any
、 means,it does make it the category with the biggest volume growth in 2023 an indication that the gin boom still has some life in it.The same cant be said for another of 2022s fastest-growing categories.Rum enjoyed 9%growth between 2021 and 2022,the second-fastest growing category only to agave-base
、d spirits, but 12 months on,the categorys fortunes have completely reversed. In 2023,rum was only surpassed by national spirits in rate of decline. That regression is evident in the categorys million-case brands where only one brand,Radico Khaitans 1965 rum, didnt experience declines last year.Focusing
、on individual categories paints a bleak picture of the industry that doesnt tell the full story.According to the IWSR,total spirits volumes fell by 1%between 2021 and 2022,and by 2%in the following 12-month period not really a significant downturn.National spirits,a nebulous category which includes
、raki, shochu, soju and the worlds largest spirit category, baijiu, declined in volume by 8%between 2022 and 2023 a notable improvement on its performance a year prior when the category fell by 13%.That upturn was helped as China completed its slow recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, meaning a lifting of
、 restrictions that was felt by the countrys baijiu brands. Now,with Chinese domestic tourism on the rise and restrictions placed on certain alcohol categories imported into the country,2024 has the potential to be a big year for baijiu.ISTOCK.COM/LIGHTFIELDSTUDIOS CATEGORY%VOLUME CHANGE 2021 TO 2022%
