1、Dear ChinaSunac Iron Works is a prestigious project with wide ranging implications to Wuhan,Greater China,and perhaps the world and we at CallisonRTKL are appreciative of your faith in our talents and the opportunity to be your partner in Master-Planning,New and Historic Architecture,Interior-Archit

2、ecture,and Landscape-Architecture.We came to name this project Continuum-1890 because the design brief tells the tale of a site with a 130-year history of manufacturing and innovation being the first Iron Works in China.But the site is not to be cleared of its history and another new use replace it,

3、instead the site is to continue its role as a site for innovation,arts,and culture within Wuhan,its manufacturing buildings of the 1960s-2000s repurposed to cooperative use by the community and new small format offices added to encourage creative businesses,cultural industry,artists,and forward thin

4、king minds to innovation over the next 130 years.Thus,the site is a Continuum of use,adapting and evolving but not destroyed in favor of the new.Our concept is at once simple but profound,to turn the site from an Iron Works to an Idea Works.Ideas are the currency of the modern world and the gateway

5、to our childrens future.We have produced 2 studies,both are similar in numbers and program with mixes of cultural,commercial,and office uses.The site in both studies is proposed to be heavily landscaped with Plum Blossoms(the Wuhan Flower)and Dawn Redwoods(the endangered Wuhan Tree that flowers in t

6、he winter)supporting curated public and cultural events.Study A takes the approach of highlighting the historic building(with a sense of reverence)on the site by use of devices such as classical ordering and orthogonal arrangement of the site.The goal here is that all new buildings and uses defer to

7、 the past for their form and order.Study B takes a more modern approach to the historic buildings,proposing that the bottom 2.4m of each historic building faade be removed in favor of a glazed ribbon and that all new buildings be rotated 6 degrees off axis.This is an interpretation of the site that

8、expresses that the new ideas(the new buildings)are looking a slightly different direction than the ideas of the past(the historic buildings).The glazed band places a neutral line of light and transparency between the modern ground and past buildings,the past(as expressed by the historic buildings)fl

18、eate 2 large rotating arts-cultural events spaces within the dramatic volumes of former factory buildings surrounded by supporting restaurants and arts-related retailers,pop-up shops,and local artist galleries.The central park would support both permanent modern sculpture and factory artifacts from

19、the sites steel making past.Central Arts is also the main access to the Eastern Site and Subway terminal,becoming the welcoming heart of the site to the larger majority of visitors.MUSEUM GREENMuseum Green is mostly open park featuring lots of trees,green-space,and train-yard relics related to the s

20、ites history as the first steel mill in china,its rail roads,and greater cultural influence.Building b1 will be the new museum for the site(not in scope of this competition)crafted within an existing 1960 brick factory shell.Museum Green is supported by 1 and 2 story restaurants in buildings b6,b7,D

21、1,and D7 as well as the rotating experimental exhibition space imagined in building b2.PERFORMANCE PLACEPerformance Place is at its heart is a series of outdoor parks and plazas designed to support performing arts,rotating sculpture exhibitions,childrens play,farmers markets,arts fairs,food truck ga

22、therings,and similar cultural and culinary gatherings.The sites former mechanical buildings b10&b15 are stripped of all walls to expose their structural machinations sheathed in glass and becoming themselves objects of art supporting arts and activities within.Overhead b15 would be a modern interven

23、tion,a large ETFE roof and frame to protect and shade a larger portion of outdoor space.This space would provide rotating performance and events space as well as childrens play areas.THE IDEA FACTORYThe site is dominated by a 500m long steel factory building crafted around the year 2000.The idea her

24、e is to strip the structure of its walls but retain its roof,exposing its grand structural scale to all visitors of the site,something that could be exaggerated and its perception altered with dramatic lighting during evening hours.Beneath the shed would be a series of intentionally modern 4 story b

25、uildings dedicated to innovative offices&retail tailored to visual arts studios,information arts companies,design centers,as well as various emerging office share formats.The upper floors of these building would reach up to enclose the existing steel shed truss-work to create some very dramatic stud

26、io spaces.Study B would take the concept a step further,removing the roof from the steel shed and designing a series of 3 story buildings with roof gardens under the dynamic and historic structure of the steel shed.The juxtaposition of green and park within the visual past of steel manufacturing.湖景相
